I prefer making the decision, booking our hotel myself and paying for it myself. Mann can do the planning and paying for the rest. But for Jena, it was all on Mann and we got a hostel because of location wise. Something the kids complained about. I think it is safe to say that I spoiled them somehow. At their age, they have their definition of what makes a hotel good or not.
Hostel Jena is an old building, bathroom is shared and no breakfast offered. If you have small kids, you cannot just let them go to the bathroom on their own. And this is what annoys me. That and no matter how much we dialled it up, our room always feel cold.
So we were happy to check out early and go to our next hotel which I have booked myself in Erfurt: Hotel am Kaisersaal.
Between a 100€ Hostel vs 250€ Hotel, going on holiday with kids is getting expensive over the years. But we enjoy it for some days in a year before the kids leave the nest. And they were satisfied with this hotel. It is warm, big enough, has private bathroom and has good breakfast. Kids were happy and I am happy.
